Two Ways to Join a Space Frame

Every steel space frame must answer one practical question: are members joined with bolts or with welds? Both are proven, and both are used in large-span roofs. The difference is best understood not as "which is stronger," but as "which fits the way the structure is built." Factory, transport, site, and inspection all shift the balance, so the right answer depends on the project rather than on preference.

Neither method is inherently superior. The decision follows from how the structure is fabricated, moved, and assembled — a sequence that differs from project to project.

A Construction-Stage Comparison

Factory Fabrication

Bolted nodes put the precision into drilling and tapping the balls and threading the rods — work done under shop control with gauges. Welded nodes put it into the welding procedure itself, which must be qualified and monitored. In both cases, quality is built in the factory, but the skill being controlled is different. In both methods the shop decides most of the quality, which is why buyers should review fabrication control rather than assume site work will correct any error.

Transportation

Bolted frames travel well: components are compact, stackable, and packed to match the erection numbering. Welded sub-assemblies are larger and need more careful handling, which can raise freight and crane demands on long routes.

On-Site Assembly

A bolted space frame assembles like a modular kit — members lifted and fixed in sequence with wrenches, adjusted, and tightened. Welded frames need either a controlled welding operation at height or heavy shop-welded sections lifted into place. Site skill and weather both weigh more heavily on welded work. For very large roofs, the ability to assemble in a controlled order matters as much as connection capacity, because the frame has to stay stable at every intermediate stage, not only when finished.

Quality Inspection

Bolted connections allow dimensional and visual inspection with recorded torque and fit checks right on site. Welded connections depend on procedure control, welder qualification, and non-destructive testing where required. The inspection method must be chosen with the connection type, so the tests and records match the way the joint actually works.

Repairability

If a bolted member or node is damaged, it can often be unbolted and replaced. A welded joint is corrected by cutting and re-welding, which is slower and more intrusive. For projects expecting maintenance access or future change, this is a real difference. Over a long service life, maintenance and occasional replacement are realistic expectations, and the connection method should not make them needlessly difficult.

Large-Span Application

Large roofs favour modular, orderly erection, which is where bolted space frames are strong: components arrive by number, go up in a planned order, and the geometry is confirmed as it grows. Welded nodes are favoured where a stiffer, shop-fabricated connection suits the design — for example, members grouped into welded units before transport. Neither choice should be forced onto a project; it should follow the design and the site. In practice many large projects combine the two: shop-welded nodes for stiffness where the design needs it, and bolted member connections for the modular erection of the wider roof.

Choose Bolted When...

  • The frame is large and must be assembled module by module on site.
  • Transport distances are long and components should be compact and numbered.
  • On-site dimensional inspection and recorded tightening are preferred.
  • Future adjustment or member replacement is likely.

Choose Welded When...

  • The design calls for stiffer, shop-fabricated nodes.
  • Welding quality can be controlled and inspected to the required standard.
  • Sub-assemblies can be pre-welded and lifted as units.
  • The site has the welding capability and conditions to match the procedure.

No Absolute Answer

Bolted and welded are not rivals; they are matched to different construction realities. The professional question is not "which is better" but "which joining method suits this span, load, site, and installation team" — and confirming that with the supplier before fabrication begins, so connection type, drawings, and site method agree from the start. When both parties agree the connection type early, drawings, fabrication, and site method line up, and the roof goes together as planned. In the end, the connection method is a construction decision as much as a structural one, and it deserves to be settled alongside the design rather than after it.
